A civics adventure written for readers of all ages.

Start with a question

How does the government make sure no single branch becomes too powerful? The system of checks and balances keeps power balanced and protects our democracy.

In brief

Checks and balances is a system where each branch of government can limit the powers of the others to prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful.

Why this matters

The United States government is divided into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. Each branch has specific powers and responsibilities. Checks and balances ensure that these branches work together and keep each other in check. For example, the legislative branch makes laws, but the executive branch can veto them. The judicial branch can declare laws unconstitutional, limiting the other two branches. This system promotes cooperation and prevents abuse of power, maintaining a stable and fair government.

A simple example

If Congress passes a law, the president can veto it. However, Congress can override the veto with enough votes. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court can review the law to decide if it follows the Constitution. This interaction shows checks and balances in action.

Questions to think about

  • Why is it important for government branches to have ways to limit each other’s power?
  • Can you think of a situation where checks and balances might cause disagreement but still help democracy?
  • How might life be different if one branch of government had all the power?

Try this

Imagine you are part of a government where one branch tries to make all the decisions alone. In small groups or by yourself, list three problems that might happen without checks and balances. Then, think of how having checks and balances could solve those problems.

One thing to take away

What is one way the branches of government check each other to keep power balanced?
