Why this matters

In many governments, power is divided among separate branches, usually the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. Checks and balances ensure that these branches share power and oversee each other. For example, the legislative branch makes laws, but the executive branch can veto them. The judicial branch can declare laws or actions unconstitutional. This system protects against abuse of power and helps maintain a fair and balanced government.

A simple example

If the legislature passes a law, the executive can reject it through a veto. However, the legislature can override that veto with enough votes. Meanwhile, courts can review the law to decide if it follows the constitution. This back-and-forth keeps the government balanced.
